FIBER & MOBILE IN SPAIN

Fiber optic and mobile in Spain: everything you need to know

Spain boasts the highest fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) penetration rate in the entire European Union, with over 80% of households connected to fibre-optic networks. This translates into real download speeds of 300 Mb to 1 Gbps in most cities and towns — a level of coverage that many European countries are still working towards. Whether you live in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, or along the coast, fibre is very likely available at your address.

Bundling fibre and mobile is the most cost-effective way to get home internet and smartphone data in Spain. Converged packages (fibre + mobile) are typically 20-40% cheaper than subscribing to each service separately, and they simplify billing into a single monthly payment.

MasMovil, Simyo, HitsMobile and Expat plans

MasMovil

MasMovil is Spain's fourth-largest telecom operator and runs on the Orange 5G network, ensuring excellent nationwide coverage. Their fibre + mobile bundles start from EUR 29.90/month and include unlimited calls, a WiFi 6 router, and up to 100 GB of mobile data in many packages. It is the best choice if you want a balance of network quality, competitive pricing, and solid customer support.

  • 5G / Orange network
  • Best coverage
Simyo

Simyo operates on the Orange network and stands out for its no lock-in contracts, meaning you can cancel at any time without penalties. One of its strongest features is accumulated data: any gigabytes you do not use in a given month roll over to the next, so you never waste your data allowance. Simyo also offers one of the fastest activations on the market, with SIM cards shipped in 24-48 hours and fibre typically installed within 3-5 business days.

  • No lock-in
  • Accumulated data
HitsMobile

HitsMobile is designed for people who frequently call abroad. All plans include international calling minutes to over 50 countries, a feature that other carriers charge extra for. If you have family or business contacts outside Spain, HitsMobile can save you EUR 15-30 per month on international calls compared to traditional operators.

  • International calls
  • 50+ countries included
Expat Plans

Expat plans include a unique feature: pausable fibre. If you spend several months outside Spain each year (for example, returning to your home country in summer or travelling for work), you can pause your fibre connection and stop paying the fixed internet fee while you are away. You only keep the mobile line active. When you return, fibre is reactivated automatically with no reinstallation charge.

Fibre speeds explained: 300 Mb vs 600 Mb vs 1 Gbps

The ideal fibre speed depends on how you use the internet at home.

300

300 Mb

Browse, stream 4K video, and make video calls without issues when 2-3 devices are connected simultaneously.

2-3 devices
600

600 Mb

Ideal for households with 4-6 devices or if you frequently download large files.

4-6 devices
1G

1 Gbps

Designed for power users, gamers, remote workers who upload heavy files, or large families with many connected devices.

6+ devices

All speeds include symmetrical fibre, meaning upload speed equals download speed. This is especially important for video calls, uploading photos and videos to the cloud, and online gaming.

Enjoy

If your building already has fibre infrastructure, installation is usually completed in under an hour.

Once you subscribe to a fibre plan, an authorised technician will visit your home to carry out the installation. The typical timeframe is 3-7 business days, depending on the area and technician availability. Installation includes fibre-optic cabling from the building junction box to your home, configuration of the ONT (optical network terminal), and a latest-generation WiFi router — all at no extra cost.

If your building already has fibre-optic infrastructure in place (which is very common in Spain), the installation is usually completed in under an hour. In buildings without existing infrastructure, the process may take a bit longer, but the operator handles everything.

Required documents to subscribe

  • DNI / NIE / Residency Card

For Spanish citizens or foreign residents. Passport accepted while NIE is in process.

  • IBAN

European bank account for direct-debit payments.

  • Photo ID copy

Photo or copy of your ID document for verification.

  • Current number (for portability)

If you want to keep your number, provide your current number and account-holder details.

To subscribe to fibre and mobile in Spain, you need three documents: your DNI (for Spanish citizens) or your NIE/Residency Card (for foreign residents), an IBAN from a European bank account for direct-debit payments, and a photo or copy of your ID document. If you are a temporary resident or your NIE is in process, you can also use your passport in many cases. The verification process is quick and can be done online.

Portability: keep your phone number

In Spain, number portability is a consumer right. You can switch operators and keep both your mobile and landline phone numbers without any interruption of service. The process is completely free and handled automatically: when you subscribe to your new plan, you simply provide your current number and account-holder details. Mobile portability is completed in one business day, while fibre/landline portability can take 3-7 days.

Save EUR 300-400 per year

The virtual and alternative operators we offer at MiMobile use the exact same fibre and mobile networks as Movistar, Vodafone, and Orange, but at significantly lower prices. For example, a bundle of 300 Mb fibre + 25 GB mobile data with unlimited calls costs around EUR 55-65/month with the big operators, while with MasMovil, Simyo, or HitsMobile you can get the same service for EUR 25-35/month. That amounts to savings of EUR 300-400 per year.

Connection quality is identical because data travels over the same physical infrastructure. The only difference is the price and customer support experience. And with MiMobile, you have an expert team to help you with the subscription and any issues that arise.

Fibre optic coverage across Spain

MadridBarcelonaValenciaSevillaBilbaoMalagaZaragozaBalearesCanarias

Spain's fibre-optic network covers more than 90% of the population. Major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Malaga, and Zaragoza have near-total coverage. But fibre also reaches mid-sized cities, coastal towns, and many rural areas thanks to the National Broadband Extension Plan. The islands (Balearics and Canaries) also enjoy good fibre coverage. If you live on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, or Costa Brava, you can expect fibre availability from 300 Mb to 1 Gbps in most residential areas.
